Often it's assumed, the point of a discussion it to convince your opponent.
However according to some article, I read some time ago (sorry, don't know the link), during discussions, only people who don't have strong opinions about the topic are convince. Those with strong opinions stick with their opinions.
This would suggest that once you acquire a strong opinion, you will never change it. Which apparently isn't true.
I once discussed this with Meldath. He told me that sometimes he accumulates a lot of different ideas in his head about the topic and then his head unconsciously "processes" it for some time (14 days, a month or so) and then he "receives" a new, better opinion. When I changed some my opinions in past, it was something like this, so maybe there's something into it.
