Today I was again to the laboratory stage after a long time (I go there every Monday and last two Mondays were holidays).
One of things which we talked about and which caught my attention. In the school we're taught the orbitals have some shape according to their l. The bond is created when orbitals of different atoms cover each other. Yet what we don't learn about in school is that this is valid only in very simple molecules. According to this model, rare gases can't create molecules. Yet Mr Farnik (to who I go on the stage) is currently researching on rare gases molecules.
How is that? Well, the electron configuration models used to describe the position of orbitals are in some way simplistic. When there are more atoms, their orbitals interact with each other. This way there can be molecules such as HXeSH are possible.
