I wouldn't go there by myself, but Bzochi said she'd go, Meldath said he'd like to see the Logic department, so why should I stay at home - I came with them.
The building is rather big, the faculty is after all one of the biggest in Charles University. It was interesting there was a lot of notice boards, on the other hand, it was often filled with not very relevant information. There was a lot of politics (not like campaigning for a party, but rather carrying some political meaning) posters - if that's what the teachers and students deem important, it's their decision...The second recurring theme was history - a lot of lectures, diploma thesis and other stuff was particularly concerned with history - even in the sections one wouldn't necessarily expect it (linguistics...).
There's a plenty of various departments (some thirty? - if you're looking for an obscure Humanities department, it's good chance you'll find it just here), so - there was a lot of people and a lot of departments' presentations was in the same time with other related fields.
The first lecture we attended was Logic. Even though Meldath told me it had good reputation even among mathematicians, I held it rather in disregard, but the presentation quite impressed me. It has apparently a good selection of teachers - a lot of well-educated external teachers, among others. Then, it's a small department - thus a lot of time to dedicate to every student. Also, the entry exams are from Math (how surprising, at the faculty...). I even think it may be a good choice for someone of my interests. Meldath said he might try it as his emergency option (after Matfyz). But then, there are some troubles that really discourage me and lead me to probably rather choose FJFI as the emergency. It's a small department and the trouble is that there's no related one in all the faculty. If I wanted to broaden my knowledge in other fields, I'd have to go to other faculties for nearly all lectures. Not that I'd mind, if it meant just a few subjects, but if there's almost nothing else? Also, I'd be almost isolated in the school. That's not to say I don't want to talk to people not studying my field, but this faculty overall attracts a lot of people (by no means all) with totally different interests (e.g. see above about the history and politics "decorations"). Also it seems to me, studying directly Math is less limiting to future job selection. Most of alumnis in here end up in academia, which I may or may not want in future.
The next lecture was Esthetics. That was terrible - we weren't even told, what the subject was about. There was a lecturer and two students. I didn't like the way they spoke. It was...they really didn't say anything - were talking without expressing anything.
The last presentation was about the Philosophy course. The room was fully filled and there was stiff air. From the information papers we got to know it may consist rather of History of Philosophy than anything else...but yes, also of the study of ancient Latin and Greek! After a while Meldath said he was becoming sick of their talking. I suggested it may have been because of the air, but then...I was not really sure ;-) I wanted to go to another presentation, but after this, I was already too...tired?
But it stroke me in the last two lectures they didn't really try to convince you to apply or to just say what were you going to study. Perhaps, they have enough students, or they suppose you know what you want if you come?
It was apparent there were quite bad relations among various people at the faculty. Sure, there are always some interpersonal problems, everywhere, but in here, it seemed to me just too much - there were remarks against other departments, not just covert, but also blatantly expressive ones. OK, not blatantly, but still, it left me in feeling people really don't like each other there...Also, the overall feeling of the building wasn't really cheerful.
Bzochi also pointed out, nearly everyone there suffers from a speech defect :-)
