Today, instead of impro, I went with a42 and Ondra to Academic Cafe to attend the lecture on nanotechnology. It happened as a part of the Week of science in the Czech Republic. The cafe is situated in the bookstore Academia at Wenceslas square.
I've been to the bookstore before and I haven't noticed the cafe. Interesting...It's yet another example of those cafes, teahouses, pubs etc. which seem to be so hidden that no one should ever go there. Yet, they seem to thrive.
The cafe was small and there were rather few people. The lectures made in the morning tend to have much more visitors, as the pupils can get out of the school. In here, we were perhaps the youngest.
It was quite original in some aspects. The environment of the cafe made it rather informal. There were three (but one may say up to five) lecturers. It was started by a song of Tata Bojs (there were also two members of the group). They were glorified for making nanotechnology the theme of their album, thus spreading the word...I'd say their image of the topic was rather naive, but never mind. At least they admitted that.
At first I was afraid we're going to be lost in very scientific debate, but soon I lost the fears. Maybe I regret it was too shallow sometimes.
At least I got to know the newest trends in the field as well as the applications that were already in use nowadays. Also, one of the lecturers was a consultant from a company dedicated to, among other things, this topic, so I got an idea how it's financially viable.
Overall, the lecture didn't seem that well prepared, it was largely based on the questions of the people there. Needn't be bad, but I think a lot of people didn't have a good idea about what that was, so they usually couldn't ask the best questions possible. Sure there were interesting things, but these were coming from the lecturers rather as fragments than continuous flow of information. Still, I'd say it was worth it.
