Doors Open day at MFF

Today it was Doors Open day at Matfyz.
In the morning, it was held at Narodni dum. It quite surprised me - there are plenty of buildings owned by Matfyz, so why to rent an expensive building? There may be reasons, but still, on the first sight it struck me.
In one hall, there was an information center, in the second the main program took place. There was a great lot of people, though if we assume some 1500 students may try the faculty and a lot of them will go to the Day...From my school, there was some ten persons, and we were by no means all from the grade who'd like to try it. Assuming the majority of us will get there, this year is going to be much more "matfyz-friendly" than the last one or others before.
First there was a brief introduction, then there was a lecture on X-rays. It was...on one hand too easy to be interesting, on the other hand too scientific to take as a funny popular lecture. That was disappointing. When it ended, we had a break and then we were being told information about the study. It may have been a bit boastful, but as one of the staff pointed out: it was well founded. It surprised me that during the entry tests one may use nearly everything: not only Math-Physics tables and calculators, but also textbooks, your own notes, laptop (not connected to the net), whatever... We had an opportunity to see the entry tests (there is Math, Physics and Informatics, one has to achieve 20 out of 50 points in at least two of them; in fact it's possible to get all forty points in just one test, simply the worst of the three doesn't count) - Math was primitive, Informatics was a bit more difficult than Math but still easy, Physics was fair (i.e. to some extent difficult, but in no way impossible).
Cheap (OK, subsidized...) food in cafeteria also drew some attention. There was also a lot of other useful information.
It ended at midday. Then there were separate programs for different departments - there were two for Physics students (btw it seems to me Physics is being somewhat prioritized all the time, but whatever), one for Informatics and one for Math (both took place at Informatics' building at Malostranska). I went to the Math program. Those were various lectures on various topics that are all investigated there. It started really badly - there was a Russian professor, he spoke Czech badly and additionally he was so silent we really heard every fifth word. The lecture was about the probability theory, but after all no one understood anything.
Then, I'd say it was becoming better and better. Just pity it was too little time (20 minutes for one presentation), so it wasn't possible to go in depth. At least one could get a blurry idea about different directions (not that it mattered now, the choice of these specializations is made in the third grade).
The best came in the end. It was the lecture on Math analysis and/or topology. The lecturer was...kind of mad. Yet mad in the way he was drowning in the ultimate beauty of the Math (sure, I have to be aware that it was just presentation of some results...but I am aware of that) . To me, it seemed so tempting, how crazy!
