It's my twisted nature, that always turns me to some crazy stuff.
Ever heard about a game consisting of just making rules of the game?
The Nomic just seems like one such game. If you get so interested as I got, what about starting a new round together? ;)

Heine-Borel theorem

What does it state?

Heine-Borel theorem: Let there be given an interval (a, b) and a set of intervals I each the members of which is in (a, b). Moreover, let I possess the properties:

(i) Every point of (a, b), other than a or b, lies inside, i.e., 'in and not at an end of', at least one interval of I;

(ii) a is the left hand and b the right hand end point of at least one interval of I.

Then it is possible to choose a finite number of intervals from the set I which form a set of intervals with the properties (i) and (ii).

Note that the set of intervals may have well been infinite and still, you can pick just a finite number while retaining all the "information".

Food safety for US college students

Some of us are going to become college students, too; some of us will perhaps even left the hometown.
I suggest we all read a few lines of advice from US department of agriculture on food safety:

Q. I will be attending a tailgate party at the stadium and enjoying hamburgers. How can I be sure the burgers are fully cooked?

A. The only way to know hamburgers are safely cooked is to use a food thermometer (...)

(OK, I admit that contracting diarrhea may be a bit unpleasant, but still...)

Biodiesel at home

Vera sent me an interesting link concerning how to make biodiesel at home from cooking oil. I suggest that you take it with a grain of salt, yet it's interesting (and also amusing). Just don't get poisoned ;-)

An important advantage of the Bohr's model
